Before moving, ensure you have all the items you'll need for the move:
- Boxes, not too large or they'll be too hard to lift.
- Packing tape, have enough so you don't have to stop and run out to buy more.
- Scissors, just remember where you leave them.
- Garbage bags, get very strong ones. Mark them with colored ribbons for code.
- Magic markers, you can use different colors for different rooms (green for kitchen, blue for bedroom..etc.)
- Newspapers, for packing your dishes and other breakable items
Make sure to mark which items you'll take yourself, so the movers won't take them. The day before moving, pack a box of things you'll need as soon as you arrive at your new home (This might include disposable plates and cups, light tools, snacks, bathroom items and trash bags). Defrost, clean and dry refrigerator.
Moving cats and dogs:
Like people, pets need time to become accustomed to a new house. To help your pet feel at home, use their favourite food bowl, bedding and toys. Keep your pet's routine as regular as possible during the move. If you normally feed, exercise, or play with your pet at certain times, continue to do so.
Moving an Aquarium:
Keep in mind that travel is very stressful on fish, and no matter how careful you are, expect to lose some. To minimize the loss of fish, here are some tips:
- Make sure your fish are well fed before the move, as they'll be too stressed to eat during the move. Fish can survive a few days without food.
- Put your fish in a holding container, then move the tank first
- Drain and disassemble your tank.
- Don't use a moving company to move the fish tank. It's much better to move it yourself.
- Setup your tank in the new house as if it were a new tank, including a few days delay before putting fish in.
- For short periods of time (a couple of hours, max) you can put the fish in sealed bags, half-filled with air. Put the bags in a padded container.
- After the move, slowly condition the fish to the new tank location, as you would in adding new fish to a tank.
